Resurrection Hope: A Future Where Black Lives Matter

Tomorrow in our Sunday School class we will continue discussing “Resurrection Hope: A Future Where Black Lives Matter” by Kelly Brown Douglas.

This evening I caught up on my reading so I can (hopefully) facilitate a constructive dialog tomorrow about the first three sections of part 2 of the book:

• From Crucifying Death…

• Resurrecting Reparations

• Re-configuring Social Memory

This is not just an intellectually challenging book to read, it is essential work for those of us that want to work as constructive cultural change agents under an administration which is flagrantly misogynistic, racist, heretical, and corrupt. But even before DJT took office, our nation has been captive to “the white gaze” that Kelly Brown Douglas vividly describes… and our “moral imaginary” has been sharply limited by the pervasive culture of whiteness and white supremacy.

In the section we will discuss tomorrow in class, Douglass concludes:

It is for this reason that in a white supremacist society the historical experiences of Black people must provide the preferential gaze through which history is viewed. Black people’s stories lay bare the profound and complex realities of injustice that need to be addressed if justice is to be enacted.

This is a call to “confront whiteness.”

It is also a call to remember snd memorialize the 500 years of resistance to a culture of domination, subjugation, and oppression in our Americas… both on the basis of ethnicity / race and gender.
