Anti-Blackness of Kant and Shakespeare
In preparing this weekend for today’s adult Sunday school class lesson and discussion, I read more in “Resurrection Hope: A Future Where Black Lives Matter” by Kelly Brown Douglas:
It is jarring to realize that in my studies of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant in college, as well as cursory studies of the works of William Shakespeare in high school, none of my teachers or professors / instructors mentioned that both Kant and Shakespeare explicitly present a worldview that is anti-black and pro-white European. This is also true for Hagel and other philosophers held up as luminaries of western political philosophy and cultural thought.
I’m thankful for the continuing opportunity are Ace Sunday school class offers to expand my knowledge, perspectives, and understanding of both literature and philosophy.
